本書介紹了天臺宗的相關哲學思想，解釋了天臺宗的本體論、形而上學、認識論和倫理學。這些解釋根植於天臺宗傳統對苦、緣起、無我、欲、空、本覺和佛性等一般佛教觀念的重新運用，並在對《妙法蓮華經》（完整的梵文名稱是：Saddharma PundarīkaSūtra）的創新敘述中徹底重建了看待這些教義的方式。
