The story of Taiwan roughly begins with the formation of the Taiwan Strait around 18,000 years ago. Austronesian peoples were the main human inhabitants of this ocean-bound island at that time. Beginning in the 17th century, many sailing ships appeared in the oceans off Asia, stimulating trade. This attracted Han people to move to Taiwan from across the Taiwan Strait. “The Story of Taiwan” exhibit explores the vitality of the island’s civil society.
