臺灣只有5種山椒魚（都是特有種），其中阿里山山椒魚是臺灣地理與海拔分布最廣的山椒魚，而玉山園區內因為涵蓋中央山脈與玉山山脈，擁有豐富的地貌形成多樣垂直氣候帶，提供阿里山山椒魚在間冰期的避難所，也使得阿里山山椒魚演化出更高的遺傳多樣性。1921年牠們被日本學者安東伊三次郎第1次發現，迄今百年來，未曾有人紀錄牠們完整早期的生命史，這本阿里山山椒魚觀察札記，記錄觀察研究人員近700個日子在玉山園區塔塔加地區域內圈養的故事，除了見證阿里山山椒魚百年繁殖奧秘，也分享了觀察阿里山山椒魚成長的過程與玉山國家公園保育的成果。
The Alishan Salamander, with the broadest geographic and elevational range of Taiwan's five species, benefits from Yushan National Park's diverse terrain, vertical climate zones, and evolutionary history.
